Firstly

Make use of the space you’ve got available. If you can create a dedicated space make sure your desk is sustainably sourced (like ours!), if you can’t find a way to make the most out the area you’re working in.

Secondly

Comfort is important! Make sure the height of the desk suits you. We offer a standard height desk, which is perfect for most people but if you’re extra tall we can provide something to suit your too. Look into buying a an office chair with good lumbar support, if you’re on a budget you can buy strap on lumbar supports to help keep any pack pain at bay.

Thirdly

Natural light is key to concentration and wellbeing. Where possible position yourself in an area with lots of natural light. If positioned next to a window try and have it side on to you, from behind will create glare leading to eye strain and in front of you will lead to distraction as you find yourself daydreaming whilst taking in the outdoors.

Fourthly

Bring the outdoors indoors. House plants are proven to help reduce workplace stress, so why not add some greenery to your workspace. Studies including NASA's Clean Air Study have also highlighted the air purifying benefits some plants can have. We recommend the easy to care for;

  • Snake plant - one of the best plants for filtering the air of formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, toluene, and trichloroethylene (don’t over water - once a week will suffice).

  • Spider Plant - will help remove toxins including carbon monoxide and xylene, it’s also non-toxic to pets (they pretty much take care of themselves!).

  • Rubber Plants - a natural humidifier and one of the best for cleansing the air, but it is toxic to pets (can take low levels of light).

  • Peace Lily - one of the best for filtering the air but if you have pets it can be poisonous to cats and dogs (a little water every other day).

Finally

Don’t get too comfortable! Remember to move around, a great time to get some extra steps in are when you’re on your phone, or have a seperate brainstorm area to move to.

Why not take your reuseable paper pad with you and put your feet up on one of our new ottomans whilst you get your creative juices flowing. Where possible try not to use paper, you can get reuseable pads and scan your notes to your laptop files, it’s easier to go paper free than you think.

We’d love to hear any other sustainable ideas and products that help you in your daily working from home needs. Thanks Sustain!
