Exploring the Unique Qualities and Characteristics of Different Timber

When it comes to crafting furniture from solid wood...

The choice of which timber to use plays a vital role in determining the final outcome of any woodworking project. At Sustain, we tend to use four different types of timber when creating our furniture - each with their own unique characteristics and individual strengths that make them suited to the task at hand.
Deciding which type of wood to choose is dependent on a number of factors including the purpose, design and aesthetic intended for the final piece. In this blog post, we will delve into the attributes and characteristics of each type of timber we use at Sustain so that you can feel empowered and confident in your decision when placing an order for one of our timeless pieces of furniture.

Reclaimed Scaffold Board Timber

Reclaimed wood is a popular choice due to its cost-effectiveness and the unique qualities that each board possesses. Did you know that some of the first items of furniture ever created by Sustain were crafted from reclaimed scaffold boards? Our roots are firmly planted in sustainability and eco-friendly practices, so if this is a prospect that you are also passionate about, choosing this type of timber may be the choice for you.

Appearance

One of the most captivating features of reclaimed scaffold boards is their unique appearance. Shaped by years of exposure to the elements and industrial use, this timber has a weathered surface, nail holes, knots and marks of wear and tear that simply can’t be replicated in new wood. Each board tells a story, carrying the character and history of its previous life to add depth and authenticity to any piece of furniture.

Strength, Durability and Best Uses

Despite its previous use in construction, this timber retains its inherent strength and durability. Designed to withstand heavy loads and rigorous conditions, the versatility of reclaimed scaffold boards knows no bounds.

Reclaimed timber is usually a type of softwood, like pine, making it lighter in weight than other types of wood. We utilise reclaimed wood in many of our projects, such as tables and floating shelves. This type of timber is perfect if you’re looking to add a touch of rustic charm to your space.

Ash

Another popular choice, ash is known for its versatility and appealing aesthetics. This hardwood is sturdy in nature with excellent shock resistance, making it suitable for furniture that needs to withstand heavy usage, and last for generations.

Appearance

At Sustain, we mainly use white ash. This timber is pale to medium brown in colour with a consistent grain pattern that is unmatched when comparing it to other types of wood. The sapwood tends to be lighter in colour than the darker heartwood, creating an attractive contrast on each board used. With its sleek features, this choice of timber may be for you if you’re looking to bring a natural yet elegant look to your space.

Strength, Durability and Best Uses

Ash is a strong and resilient hardwood, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Utilising this type of timber in furniture will ensure that you receive a piece that’ll last forever. Ash is perfect for creating solid tables and is also a popular choice when it comes to cabinetry and in-built home designs. It’s ability to withstand the test of time allows for a myriad of design possibilities.

Pine

Cost-effective and widely available, pine is a popular softwood that is easy to work with. This type of timber takes stains remarkably well, allowing for a gorgeous variety of finishing options.

Appearance

Pine has a distinct pale yellow colour that features prominent knots and varied grain patterns. Similar to our reclaimed boards but without the marks of wear and tear, this type of timber is a perfect alternative if you’re looking for a piece of furniture that has a unique charm as well as a rustic feel, without signs of previous use.

Strength, Durability and Best Uses

Despite being a softwood, pine is still remarkably durable. Perfect for shelving and furniture, this timber is best suited for indoor use and provides a comforting, homely feel to any interior.

Oak

Oak is an exceptional hardwood that has been revered for centuries due to its beauty, strength and durability.

Appearance

Featuring a prominent grain pattern, oak adds visual appeal to any piece of furniture. It exhibits a reddish-brown hue that provides a timeless and traditional feel to any space – ideal for both rustic and contemporary designs.

Strength, Durability and Best Uses

Renowned for its outstanding strength, oak timber is highly resistant to wear, making it suitable for furniture that requires heavy use and wear. Best suited for cabinetry, bed frames and tables, as well as in built home design pieces, oak is widely versatile and is a good choice for the majority of projects.

In summary, the choice between oak, ash, and pine timber depends on the specific requirements of your project.
If you seek a timeless, sturdy hardwood with an elegant appearance, oak may be the best choice. For versatility, shock resistance, and a beautiful grain pattern, ash wood would be an excellent option. On the other hand, if you are looking for a budget-friendly and light weight wood with a rustic charm, pine and reclaimed wood might be the ideal pick.
Understanding the unique characteristics of each timber type will empower you to make the correct choice with your piece of furniture. One that stands the test of time and brings joy for generations to come. Whether you choose the classic allure of oak, the adaptability of ash, or the rustic appeal of pine, your furniture will be sure to showcase the beauty and craftsmanship of natural, solid wood.
